David L. Snyder (1956-2012)
We at Snyder & Snyder, LLP pay tribute to our founder, David L. Snyder: “A Fearless Leader Who Was Always ‘Mobile.’”
David L. Snyder, Managing Partner of Snyder & Snyder, LLP, passed away at the age of 56 on November 22, 2012.
David started the firm with his wife and law partner, Leslie Snyder, in February 1990. Before forming Snyder & Snyder, LLP, he practiced environmental law in Washington, D.C., with the firm of Chadbourne & Parke. In Washington, David was the principal speechwriter and aide to former Senator and Secretary of State, Edmund Muskie. He co-authored with Mr. Muskie a number of articles regarding the financing of resource recovery facilities. David was considered an expert on flow control of recyclable material, and was a frequent lecturer on solid waste issues from 1980-1992, often appearing as a speaker at the United States Conference of Mayors.
David was responsible for obtaining construction permits and approvals for prominent environmental projects, including the Westchester County refuse burning power plant in Peekskill, New York, the Dutchess County resource recovery plant in Poughkeepsie, New York, and various multi-material recycling centers in New York City. From 1990-2000, David served on the Westchester County Refuse Advisory Board, which oversees public refuse disposal facilities and services.
With David’s expertise in environmental law and Leslie’s concentration in commercial real estate and zoning law, Snyder & Snyder, LLP developed its practice in telecommunications law. The firm made Robert Gaudioso a partner in 2000, and cultivated a team of attorneys and staff with its main office in its own building in Tarrytown, New York.
Under David’s leadership, the firm has represented major telecommunications providers and tower companies in leasing, permitting, environmental, and litigation issues for over two decades. David enthusiastically endorsed wireless communications and stressed its importance for public safety and closing the digital divide, thereby improving the lives of everyone in the community. With David leading the charge in a number of cases, the firm gained approvals for more than 1,000 wireless communication sites throughout the tri-state area. He was a leader in the deployment of wireless facilities for major shopping malls, hotels, office buildings, and public facilities such as Kennedy, Newark, and LaGuardia Airports as well as the tunnels leading into New York City.
David was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and readily appeared in both federal and state courts. He was licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia. He frequently spoke at notable conferences throughout the United States including those sponsored by PCIA, AGL, the Northeast DAS forum, and as a telecommunications expert on Bill O’Reilly’s FOX News show.
David generously gave his time throughout the years. He was an adjunct professor at Pace University School of Law, where he taught telecommunications law. David was a leader at Chabad Lubavitch of Westchester County, always helping those less fortunate. He was honored by Chabad twice—in 2000, he received the young leadership award, and in 2012, the Snyder family received its leadership award. David was also appointed to the Albert Einstein Board of Young Business Leaders in 2006. He loved his family and was a wonderful husband and father to his two daughters.
David Snyder was a role model for other attorneys in Westchester. He empowered women, and Snyder & Snyder, LLP was one of the first firms in Westchester County to have a maternity policy and accommodate working mothers’ schedules. David instilled in Snyder & Snyder, LLP that we “can make it happen” with hard work, creativity, and a personal touch.
We proudly continue his legacy and are so grateful that we worked with such an incredible lawyer, teacher, and friend.
